PURE511 ALERT! Skin So Soft

Do you remember when Avon’s Skin So Soft (SSS) lotion was not only an amazing moisturizer but it could also stop bugs from biting? WELL…SSS is not a lotion – it’s a blend of mineral oil and esters that lubricates without being too wet or greasy. The first ingredient in SSS is Mineral oil.

The most amazing thing about this product is for years people were convinced it was an excel...lent mosquito repellent. In fact, so many people were buying SSS for this reason Avon launched a companion product that contained a non-DEET active.

Unfortunately, this urban legend has been thoroughly debunked by Snopes.com. They reported on a 2002 study that evaluated 17 nationally marketed mosquito products. The researchers found that the more DEET the products contained the better they worked. Off! Deep Woods kept the nasty buggers at bay for an average of 302 minutes. By comparison SSS only worked for 9.6 minutes. You can read more at Snopes.com or you can read the original study in the New England Journal of Medicine, 4 July 2002 vol 347:13-18 Number 1.

PURE511 ALERT! Softsoap

Softsoap’s Lavender and Chamomile liquid soap is one of the top selling products on Amazon.com. Looking at the label you’ll see that it contains neither lavender nor chamomile.

Water, Sodium C14 16 Olefin Sulfonate, Lauramide DEA, Sodium Chloride, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Fragrance, DMDM Hydantoin, Citric Acid, Tetrasodium EDTA, Polyquaternium 7, Glycerin, PEG 7 Glycerol Cocoate, Benzophenone 4, Hydrolyzed Silk Protein, Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Leaf Juice, Ext D&C Violet 2 (CI 60730)

Is this legal? Yes, Softsoap did not “claim” this product had lavender or chamomile in it, only the scent of lavender and chamomile. See…

“Soothe your spirit while cleansing hands. The relaxing scent of lavender, fresh from the field, entwines with tender chamomile flowers. Brings a moment of calm to stressful days and helps leave skin feeling soft.”

PURE511 ALERT! Labeling

Don’t be fooled, when the cosmetic companies want to look like a “natural” product this is what happens in the labeling. Let’s say my shampoo is made of mostly water (about 90%) and the rest (10%) is detergent, preservative, thickener, color, etc. So my ingredient list would read something like ...

“Water, detergent, preservative, thickener, color, etc.”

Now, let’s say I want to... make this formula look more natural by adding a bunch of plant extracts. My supplier will formulate a cocktail of 10 or 12 different botanicals, at low concentrations, in water (sometimes alcohol, glycerin, or polyethylene glycol is used as a diluent along with the water.) I’m still adding almost 90% water but now that water contains a small percent of botanical extracts. Since these extracts (along with the water in which they are diluted) make up the majority of the formula, I could create a “natural looking” ingredient list something like this…

“Aqueous Purified Water Extracts: Camellia Sinensis Extract, Citrus Aurantium Amara Peel Extract (Bitter Orange), Astragalus Root (Membranaceus) Extract (Milk Vetch), Schizandra Chinensis Fruit Extract, Pinus Tabulaeformis Bark Extract (Pine), Vitis Vinifera Seed Extract (Grape), Sedum Rosea Root Extract, Rehmannia Chinensis Root Extract, detergent, preservative, thickener, color, etc.”

PURE511 ALERT! Expectant Mothers

Expectant mothers and mothers to be this message is a wake-up call for you and EVERYONE to watch what you put on your skin. In 2005, the Environmental Working Group published a combination of two studies that found toxic chemicals in the umbilical cord blood of newborn babies born in the U.S. in the fall of 2004. They screened for more than 400 chemicals, and an astounding 287 tox...ins were detected within the umbilical cord blood of these newborns. Of these 287 chemicals, 217 were neurotoxins, and 208 are known to damage growth development or cause birth defects. These study results have been largely ignored by the media….don’t you ignore them too!

PURE511 ALERT! Carcinogens

A carcinogen is any substance, radionuclide or radiation that is an agent directly involved in causing CANCER.

8 carcinogens to remove from your home today!

1. Air fresheners contain napthelene and formaldehyde.

2. Art and craft materials such as all Elmer’s glue adhesives and polymers, paint brush cleansers, glazes, products that “stain” ceramic, wood, etc.

3. Automotive supplies should be ...locked away and dispose of remnants or containers at a hazardous waste facility….do not throw in the trash!

4. Dry cleaning (I am so guilty) the conventional way contains naphthalene, benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene. Alternative is ask for wet-cleaning and find dry cleaners that use liquid CO2 or citrus juice cleaners.

5. Flea, tick and lice control contain lindane which causes seizures and death even when used according to directions.

6. Paints and varnishes contain volatile organic compounds which are carcinogenic.

7. Mothballs are nearly 100% percent naphthalene, a carcinogen or paradichlorobenzene, a toxin. When you inhale mothballs you are inhaling insecticide.

8. Cleaning products; but not all are carcinogenic. The worst products are mold and mildew cleaners; try a natural approach by using vinegar and tea tree oil. Carpet and upholstery cleaners; try steam cleaning. Furniture polishes contains nitrobenze which is a reproductive and central nervous system toxin. Yes it will affect your ability to have children. Try an all-natural polish or make you own with 1/8 cup olive oil or other vegetable oil mixed with 1 tablespoon vinegar and1 tablespoon vodka.

PURE511 ALERT! Even Out Your Skin Tone

This week I was asked, “What natural products are available that will help even out skin tone?” Excellent question, first, let’s all agree that the over- the-counter fade creams contain hydroquinone, which is a definite “no-no”. Please view this short, 8 minute video discussing this toxic chemical.

http://www.dermalogica.com/fact-check%3A-is-hydroquinone-safe%3F/ys_skintone_4,default,pg.html?gclid=CjgKEAjwtOGbBRDx1dn6kqySxG0SJABQGZsweOBkvo3sukgu3Be-kohCceS2uNFqjcqq4A6CBfGpjvD_BwE

An all-natural, alternative option is a DIY serum in which you can create at home. Please take the time to read the article below and choose which Essential Oil(s) addresses your issue and mix 12 drops of that Essential Oil with 1 ounce Almond Oil in a brown glass bottle, shake and dab onto skin daily. If you choose multiple oils in your mixture, still using 1 ounce of Almond Oil, mix your drops of Essential Oil at a total of 12 drops per ounce. For example, 4 drops Geranium , 4 drops Cypress, 4 drops Rose and 4 drops Ylang Ylang = 12 drops and mix with 1 ounce Almond Oil. If you have any further questions, let me know.

PURE511 ALERT! Alumuninum

Since the warm weather is upon us, deodorants and antiperspirants have been a major topic as to whether or not the main ingredient, aluminum and zirconium are related to breast cancer. There are some key differences between deodorant and antiperspirant. Deodorants don't have any reinforcements to keep you from sweating -- once you apply deodorant you're going to perspire; but deodorant does work to counteract the smell. On the other hand, antiperspirants keep you from sweating. They do this through ingredients like aluminum and zirconium, which plug the sweat glands found in your underarms.

Aluminum has been the target of many studies. The aluminum found in antiperspirants has been shown to cause DNA mutation, a requisite for uncontrolled growth of cells, cancer [source: Darbre, http://www.controlyourimpact.com/articles/antiperspirants-aluminum-and-breast-cancer/]. Other studies have refuted this claim, and reproducing results has been hit or miss [source: National Cancer Institute, http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/AP-Deo].

These studies happen way too often, leaving the consumer confused; whereas, today a personal care product is safe and tomorrow it is the cause of a class action lawsuit. To avoid all this, I have opted to use an all-natural deodorant by Arm & Hammer Essentials.

Pure5 brings you the information, allowing you, the consumer to make a well informed decision!
